The Department of English at Kashi Naresh University has been a torchbearer of a rich linguistic and literary legacy spanning more than seven decades. Established in 1951, the department traces its origins to the institution's distinguished history as a Government Postgraduate College, established long before its eventual elevation to university status. Since its inception, the department has remained a vibrant centre of learning, research, and literary scholarship.

Over the decades, the Department of English has been privileged to have eminent teachers and scholars whose dedication, scholarship, and academic excellence have contributed significantly to its growth and reputation. As one of the nine early departments of the college, it has left an everlasting mark on the institution's academic culture. Distinguished scholars such as Dr. Brijadhish Prasad, Dr. Mohan Lal, Shankar Bahdur Srivastva, Dr. S. C. Bose, Dr. B. P. Mishra and M. Iqbal were associated with the department during its first three decades and made valuable contributions to the teaching and study of English literature. Dr. Mohan Lal was a distinguished scholar who earned his doctoral degree from the University of London.

The department has also been fortunate to have eminent scholars such as Dr. Satish Kumar, who authored remarkable books on a variety of subjects. His book A Trip Down the Memory Lane is a valuable memoir not only of the department but also of the college as a whole. Through his scholarly works and publications, he left an indelible impression on generations of students and readers. The department has also produced a significant body of research over the years. A large number of Ph.D. theses and research projects have been successfully completed under the guidance of its faculty members, including Dr. Lalji Mishra. The academic contribution of the department extends beyond the university as well. Two of its distinguished teachers, Dr. Preeti Gautam and Dr. Brahmdev, went on to serve as Directors of Higher Education of Uttar Pradesh, thereby bringing further recognition to the department's academic stature.

The Department of English continues its intellectual journey by exploring folk literature, myths, religions, creative writing, and various other dimensions of literary and cultural studies. Overall, the department seeks to inculcate critical reasoning and poetic sensibility in students, enabling them to acquire not only proficiency in language and literature but also essential professional skills. Keeping pace with changing times, the Department of English places considerable emphasis on career counselling in the fields of language and communication, which have the potential to transcend national and cultural boundaries.
